Another Fun Day in La Conner

Evidently in La Conner for the Smithsonian Exhibit EXPLORING AMERICA’S FOOD TRADITIONS which just opened and runs through January 4 were a flock of area wild turkeys.

They were dressed in their finest black & white plummage and very vocal when my daughter and I encountered them on the return to our car after the opening activities at the County Historical Museum.  Their presence was substanial enough to cause a full-blooded American pick-up truck to make a U-turn to find an alternate route.

La Conner offers upscale accommodations for these wild residents.  They are able to leap from carpots and garages to lofty treetop roosts and enjoy an excellent view of the channel.  La Conner residents tell me one of their favorite overnight spots is near the Gaches Mansion, home of the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum.

The first turkeys, a male & female, chose La Conner as their home in spring of 2004.  Eight chicks appeared the next spring, and by Thanksgiving of 2005, the mayor of La Conner declared them the official town mascot, and the rest is history!!

The beautiful sunny skies, great exhibit complete with live accordian music by Hugo’s Accordion Band, and, yes, some shopping in the ever-tempting La Conner boutiques made for a great day on the town, Pacific Northwest style!
